Ten months later, he finally arrived at Jamestown and evacuates the colony with the intent of taking everyone back to England. They were stopped by Lord De La Warr, who ordered them to go back. After the Sea Venture, De La Warr became governor and sent Gates back to England for more supplies. While there, he argued for continual support for the colony and was successful. He went back to Jamestown in August 1611 and became Governor after De La Warr retired. As governor, Gates started a war with the surrounding Native American tribes. He also supported John Rolfe’s idea to grow tobacco in the colony and in 1614, he sailed back to England with the first four bales of it. He was planning to return to the colony in 1618 but over the course of the next two years, he sold all his shares in the Virginia Company and died shortly after. He had a wife, who died on a voyage to Jamestown in 1611, and at least four children.
